AGU Outstanding Student Paper Award for Moritz Bernauer
Moritz Bernauer of LMU Munich won an AGU Outstanding student paper
award at the 2008 AGU Fall Meeting for his poster presentation entitled
"Inferring
near-receiver structure from combined measurements of rotational and
translational ground motions".
The paper - co-authored by Andreas Fichtner and Heiner Igel -
presents a new formulation of the seismic inverse problem based on
collocated observations of translations and rotations. In several
examples they show that shear-wave velocity can be reconstructed
without the use of travel times but using amplitude ratios of
translations and rotations as observables.
A paper with the same title is accepted for publication in "Geophysics".
Congratulations to Moritz!
